ADEPT's response to the Government's Resources and Waste Strategy
Responding to the Government’s publication of ‘Our Waste, Our Resources: A Strategy for England’, Paula Hewitt, Chair of the Environment Board for the Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning and Transport (ADEPT) said:
“ADEPT welcomes the Government’s new strategy and fully endorses its commitment to making the UK a world leader in resource efficiency.
“We support the Government’s recognition that producers and manufacturers must meet the whole life cost of managing resources, helping to reduce waste and provide high quality recyclable materials.
“Local authorities have worked hard to increase recycling levels and innovate, but their ability to move towards more consistent collection methods, manage food waste and tackle waste crime is undermined by the Government’s ongoing funding cuts.
“We need to significantly reduce the amount of waste we create, and to reuse and recycle far more, therefore we want to see increased investment in the UK’s own recycling capacity. The nation cannot keep exporting waste to countries that cannot deal with it in an environmentally-friendly way.
“We are concerned that the pace of delivery may not be fast enough across the country without adequate funding, so we will continue to work with Government to ensure the ambitions contained within the strategy can be delivered”
