President update 1st October- latest news from ADEPT

Hello everyone,

It really does feel like autumn has arrived - the mornings are crisper, the evenings are drawing in and there’s a sense of momentum as we head into another busy season for ADEPT.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve attended a number of meetings with government and partners. At the Northern Housing Consortium for the Market Condition Assessment (MCAS) I was able to bring ADEPT’s perspective into the discussions. I attended the MHCLG Local Government Funding Reform Strategic group meeting, where it was confirmed that, after the Budget on 26th November, a consultation on the provisional settlement will take place between 15th December and 9th January, with the final settlement expected on 3rd February.

I ‘popped in’ to the East of England and Midlands Board meetings, plus the Transport & Connectivity Board, to say hello. It was lovely to see this year’s cohort for the Leadership Pathway Programme at their initial get together too. Finally, Hannah and I have met several MPs in recent weeks: our aim is to raise the association’s profile and emphasise that we can provide insights and expertise in a range of areas.

The Department for Transport also provided an update to ADEPT’s Leadership Team on the Integrated National Transport Strategy, a cohesive plan for integrating different modes of transport, improving connectivity and supporting both local and national ambitions. It was interesting to hear how the strategy is evolving and to consider the role local places play in shaping transport solutions that meet the needs of their communities.

A quick update on this year’s National Traffic Managers’ Conference on Wednesday 8th October - it has now moved online, making it easier than ever to attend. This year’s theme is ‘Adapting to change: the role of the traffic manager’, and the event will focus on the changes, challenges and opportunities facing traffic managers today. I’ll be there as I will be chairing the event! Please book your free place here.

Looking ahead, our Autumn Conference on 21st–22nd November at The Lowry Hotel in Manchester is shaping up to be a fantastic event. If you haven’t already seen, Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, will be joining us as a keynote speaker, alongside a strong line-up of other expert voices. We’ll be exploring the big themes of devolution, local government reform, resilience and innovation. I hope to see many of you there - you can book here.
