Women in Transport - female leadership in the transport sector - video
Timed to launch for International Women’s Day on 8th March 2022, the ADEPT SMART Places Live Labs programme has released a fascinating video featuring four female project leads in conversation.
Unusually, for the highways sector, four of the eight Live Labs project leads are female, so we wanted to capture their thoughts and experiences of being women in transport before the project comes to a close.
Led by ADEPT CEO Hannah Bartram, Brigitte Sodano-Carter from Suffolk, Carol Valentine from Kent, Louise Clayton from Staffordshire and Sarah Bayliss from Transport for West Midlands share their individual perspectives on their careers and what it’s like to be female leaders in what is still a predominantly male, engineering-focused sector.
Conversation ranged from how they began working in highways to what challenges they have faced, including some of the more difficult issues of bias and difference. They were full of advice they’d give to other women starting out in the sector and about what they think needs to happen to encourage more women and female leaders, particularly how the pandemic has enabled greater flexibility for many women. They were all positive that the gender balance is shifting, just too slowly.
The full interview is absolutely worth a watch for both men and women in transport and beyond - please click here to watch the video.
