ADEPT response to the Budget

Katie Stewart, President of ADEPT, said: “We welcome the government’s aim of achieving full devolution across England by the end of 2028. The ten new devolution agreements highlighted in today’s Budget represent an opportunity to re-shape and strengthen local government in those regions, and ADEPT hopes to see the process successfully concluded as soon as possible.

“The new agreements must give Mayors the powers and the flexibility they need to work with councils to build increasingly prosperous, vibrant and resilient communities. Councils will continue to perform a vital role supporting the new Mayoral Combined Authorities in addressing the complex challenges faced by communities up and down the country.

“It is good to hear that the government intends to allow local and regional government to retain 100% of business rate income raised locally before the end of the decade. It is right that these funds should remain within communities and be used to address the priorities which are most important for local people. Local authorities will play a key role in ensuring the new approach delivers these benefits successfully.”
