Lunch & Learn with Systra
Wednesday 25th March, 12pm-12.45pm
Angus Spence, Principal Consultant at Systra will present this session on Introducing Collision Seek
Collision Seek is a machine-learning-powered road safety analysis platform developed by SYSTRA Ltd. It enables transport planners, highway engineers, road safety officers and researchers to understand collision risk at any location, along any route, and across entire road networks in Great Britain. The tool demonstrates how geospatial data and emerging machine learning techniques can be harnessed by local authorities to put a new analytical lens on aged problems.
Traditional approaches to road safety assessment rely on historic collision records at or near a specific site. This is problematic for two reasons: at most individual locations, the number of recorded collisions is too small to draw statistically meaningful conclusions; and the collisions that have occurred are the product of a stochastic process, meaning they may not be representative of the true underlying risk.
Collision Seek addresses both challenges. It uses a trained neural network to characterise the physical road environment at any location, then searches a national database of collision sites to find the most similar environments. By drawing on evidence from thousands of comparable locations, it produces a statistically robust profile of the types, severities and circumstances of collisions that are most likely to occur — regardless of the local collision history.
*This session is open to ADEPT members only. Only colleagues from ADEPT member organisations and corporate partners will be admitted
